Katie Clarke

I am the proud mother of 6 children and in between the ironing and being on the internet I am a campaigner, traveller, music lover and I like walking in the hills.   I have set up 4 organisations in the last 16 years all working with families with disabled children.

Being a parent of a disabled child has entered me into the world of human rights and disability. Meeting hundreds of parents over the years and has given me a deep insight into the daily struggles and challenges as well as the joys and the celebrations of bringing up a young person into a new world of austerity and cuts.

I believe in telling the truth and letting families know what is happening in the world around them to raise their awareness.  At the same time I plant seeds of inspiration and love to give families hope and dreams for a better future for their own children.  Working with families to build their resilience for the marathon of what lies ahead and to look at their lives with positivity feels even more important now than before. I can give on line advice initially on this site and through other organisatiuons that I am highly involved with.

I am the founder of the following organisations:

Bringing Us Together

www.bringingustogether.org.uk

We have a new project called Justice Together.

Visits Unlimited (working with the tourist industry)

www.visitsunlimited.org.uk

1Voice – Communicating Together

www.1voice.info

Calderdale Parent Council

http://www.cpandc.org.uk

I also am a trainer for Contact a Family, Council for Disabled Children, and work freelance running workshops, seminars and speaking at conferences.

Hello

Welcome to "You Know.
After many years of working for a great little charity called Ling Trust I came out into the real world 18 months ago. I've found there is some great housing and care out there. People have really made great steps over the last thirty years to help people get the best lives they can.
So this site is a start. It's in memory of my lovely mum, Jean, who died just a few months ago, I know she was able to enjoy the best of care and support through her own personalised budget and having her own carers,  I'm launching " You Know" and I hope it will grow into something really useful because one thing I know is having the right information and decent people to advise and help you gives  the power back. What I can't say is that this is consistent and I have been more and more shocked and disillusioned by what I have seen and experienced. I'm seeing still a system of power, control, unnecessarily incarceration, lip service to any sense of personalisation and continuing abusive practices  running alongside all the good practice that we know is the right way to care for our most vulnerable people.  I'm constantly asked to help advocate for the person at the receiving end of poor services and very poor advice . I know many good people out there who find themselves doing exactly the same.
This site will have  the UKs best in helping you get the right information at the right time. It's small now and finding its feet but I hope it will become the place where great knowledge is shared. Eventually we will have a ratings page for every agency and care home in " trip advisor" fashion too and hopefully a national advocacy service in conjunction with people like " Justice  Together"
Let's hear from the people who use these places and agencies what they really think about them !
The information is free on this site. We welcome advertising but that has to be paid for. "You Know"  is trading under My Great Life CIC, a small social enterprise.
So here's to a wealth of shared knowledge. Together we can stand up and beat poor care and information . This site will link you through to many others who are also working to make the care of our most vulnerable a better place. It starts with a few people, who in my view, are simply the best.
